Todos Santos (Mexico) | Trust the Day - Day 13

Punta Lobos beach in Todos Santos is a few kilometers from where I am staying. Today I walked down to enjoy the Pacific Ocean and Humpback Whales.

Sometimes living in the moment causes you to miss out. A decision made spontaneously can create ripples that can be unsettling. My adventure road trip yesterday was one of those moments. I only booked three nights of accommodation and got a refund on my second night. It wasn't until my return trip from Puerto San Carlos that I realized I had yet to book accommodation beyond last night. However, I did have the foresight to submit a request to add an additional night to my reservation while heading back to Todos Santos.

This morning, I realized that that request had been denied. It is Saturday today, and all rooms are full. What to do? Unfortunately, I just discovered this after I dropped off my laundry in Todos Santos this morning. My laundry will be ready for pickup around 4 pm, and I have no bed for tonight.

I am precisely halfway between La Paz and Cabo San Lucas. Both are options, and so is Todos Santos, or at least I thought that was the case. Unfortunately, there are no reasonable rooms in Todos Santos tonight, so it looks like I am moving. I contemplate more options. I wouldn't mind returning to Cabo San Lucas, exploring the Pacific Ocean side, and circling my way east to San Jose del Cabo before turning north again. Then again, I enjoyed La Paz and would be OK returning there to enjoy it further. My options narrowed further. There are no viable options in Cabo at the moment.

The road to the beach meanders across the desert. Off in the distance to the east, I can see beautiful mountains. Unfortunately, with the cloud cover, they are not visible on the camera.

I forgot that Sully Erna of Godsmack, a rock n roll band, celebrates his birthday in Cabo San Lucas each year at the Cabo Wabo. They perform live each year and draw a huge crowd. No wonder accommodations are slim in Cabo. So, after spending too long researching options, I am heading back to La Paz.

Now that it is settled, I have several hours before my laundry is ready, and I can take a bus. Time to go walk to the beach and explore.

I walk north along the beach. The tied is coming in. Shortly after passing this scenic spot, I stop and sit. In the distance, I see an endless array of whale fountains. Occasionally I watch them beach out of the water. Clearly, the whales are Humpbacks.

Around 3 pm, it starts to sprinkle. I have had my fill for the day and begin returning to grab my things, then my laundry, and head back to the bus station where I buy a ticket for the 5 O'clock bus to La Paz.

I get on the bus and take my seat next to an American with headphones on. He takes his headphones off, and we begin to chat. Jason is from Minnesota and was out fishing in San Jose del Cabo. "I didn't think that Dorado (i.e., Mahi Mahi) were running yet. Isn't it in March?" I ask. "They are starting their run, and we caught several today," he says as he pulls out his phone to show me the beautiful fish they caught. Dorado have a lovely iridescent blue, green, and yellow complexion.

Jason and I hit it off. We talk about travel and places we've been. It helps pass the time on the bus and is much better than listening to a podcast. When we near La Paz, we exchange contact information on WhatsApp, then he bails and exits the bus at one of the first bus stops in La Paz.

When I finally arrived at La Paz Malecon bus station, I was surprised by the beautiful scene and sunset. I thought I was too late. It feels good to be back in La Paz, and it is much warmer today than when I left. It fun to let go and let the day take me where I need to be.
